Melissa Young

English Teacher

Young

Bio

Mrs. Young decided to dress up as a teacher for Halloween as a 2nd grader in 1986, and once she learned she could have a voice through her words (both spoken and written) in Mrs. Marks' 11th grade Honors American Literature class, she decided she would become an English teacher.  She earned her degrees in English with a concentration in American Literature (01) and her MEd in Secondary English Education (02) from the University of Florida. She also holds a gifted teaching endorsement.  Her past experience includes teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELA in Gwinnett, Fulton and Houston County.  After a decade of growing her family, Mrs. Young returned to the classroom and finally got the chance to step into the high school English classroom at Veteran's High.  This will be her 10th year of teaching.

Mrs. Young counts her 21-year marriage to Alex and having a front row seat to her children's lives-- Jeremiah (17), Sarah (15), Rachel (13), and Julia (7)-- to be her greatest accomplishments.  A close second was when her teen daughter acknowledged that her mother had selected an on-trend outfit for her to wear (outfit inspiration was the now-classic 90's favorite Clueless).

At home, Mrs. Young devours books, podcasts, pop culture, Diet Dr. Pepper, and makes lots of lists on her phone about possible travel plans.  She owns a yoga mat and has been known to take a stupid mental health walk.  Church community keeps her connected and sane.  She can't wait to visit more American cities with her big kids and be chauffeured around town by them.
